Dog pee problem

Does anyone have any advice for getting rid of the brown spots on the grass caused by dog pee? We've got around half a dozen spots, mostly on the verge that wraps around our corner lot. The sod has been down for about two months and some areas are starting to go brown because of the hot weather, but these spots are obviously caused by puppy peepee - trying saying that 10 times really fast!

Also, I'd like to ask dog owners how they feel about “no dog” signs. My wife and I like dogs, but our lawn apparently doesn't. Is it bad form to put out a little sign saying “no dogs on the lawn” or something? I'd love to hear your comments and recommendations for what to do.

  1. My dog turns the grass orange. I am also curious about how to prevent that when we move. I would never let my dog pee in someone else's yard. It's totally rude. I don't think it would be bad if you put up a sign.

  2. A tablespoon of tomato juice added to the water bowl each time you fill it (up to a 1/2 cup a day and can be added to the dog's food too) will stop this. There's plenty of pro's/con's on the web about this - as with anything you look up on there - but it's one I have tried with great success! And if you follow one of the "con's" about doing this because of the increased sodium content it will give your best friend, then get the low sodium tomato juice version - which Campbell's makes.

  3. I have the same problem from a neighbors dogs, its pretty much only in one spot. I think the dog owners that walk their dogs should be considerate of peoples lawns. I see people walking dogs with no pooper scoopers or whatever. I presently don't own a dog because I do not have the time to care for one,I should not have to clean my yard of animal waste. That may be a good idea to put up a sign, I dont think dog owners intentionally want to mess up someones yard.

  4. Go to www.personalizationmall.com They have inexpensive yard stakes that you can personalize to put in your yard. Most of them are for your home address or welcome signs; but you can personalize the sign to say "no dogs on lawn" or pick up after your dog" or "pick up your dog poop" or "pick up your poop" etc etc etc etc.

  5. I have dogs. And sometimes I get off my lazy butt and walk them. When they poo, I pick up. When the piss, I think nothing of it. Now that being said, if a yard I walked by had a "keep your pooch off my grass" sign, I would respect.

  6. We haven't had any poop problems, thank goodness. Just peeing so far. After listening to your comments, I'm leaning toward getting a discrete sign. Part of the problem is that we have one of those community mail center thingies and almost everyone walks right past our place to get their mail, usually with their dogs. The crazy thing is our community has literally acres of undeveloped land just waiting for dogs to pee on, but they evidently prefer our nice new grass.
